Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Counselor

FLSA Classification: Exempt, Salaried
Position Type: Full time days. Open to part-time for the right candidate.
Reports to: Chief Operating Officer (COO)

Qualifications & Skills

  • Current AOD certification with CCAPP, CAADE, CADTP (or be actively pursuing), or currently registered with the BBS as an associate pursuing clinical licensing.
  • Two years of experience working with substance use and/or co-occurring disorders.
  • Foundational skills in motivational interviewing, relapse prevention, and CBT.
  • Familiarization with local resources for housing, primary medical care, employment assistance, and other behavioral health services.
  • Strong documentation and time management skills.
  • Proficient in MS Office and experience with EMR systems.
  • High emotional intelligence, ability to develop an effective therapeutic alliance with clients, and comfortable with ambiguity within a fast-paced environment.


  • Conduct individual assessments, counseling and group sessions, documentation of sessions, development of treatment plans, case management, and crisis intervention.
  • Assess for, identify, and connect clients to needed resources beyond those provided at the AAR Healthcare facility.
  • Interface with AAR’s Medical Director and other medical personnel as appropriate.
  • Work cooperatively with other community resources and referral sources to coordinate services to clients if deemed necessary.
  • Strive to increase professional growth and effectiveness through training and by keeping abreast of current trends and theories in relevant areas.
  • Pursue/maintain appropriate state license/registration/certification for scope of practice.
